Everest Base Camp trek winds through rocky terrain, raging rivers, archaic villages, lush forests, and glaciers. Since we will be walking through the lush forests, we may get the chance to spot some of the wild animals including snow leopards. Trekking in Nepal is always exciting as we get the opportunity to see more than just landscapes, we get to explore the ancient culture, lifestyle, and people who make you feel like home.

The trail is dotted with the beliefs of local people i.e. prayers flags, chortens, gumbas, and monasteries. In the month of October, the local people celebrate Mani Rimdu Festival which lasts for few days.

One of the most coveted trekking routes in Everest region, Everest Base Camp trek can be completed within fifteen days (we will typically walk for twelve days). The trek starts with a short scenic flight to Lukla from Kathmandu. We start Everest hike from Lukla and walk through enchanting villages including Phakding, Namche Bazaar, Tengboche and more. The majestic mountains, lush forest, arresting villages, diverse vegetation, colorful birds make navigating this trail worthy and exciting.

How much the Everest base camp trek cost?

Nepal Trekking path carefully allocates the budget for each trip. Depending upon the season, trek length and type of the trek, the trek cost may differ. What is the Everest base camp trek itinerary?

The fifteen days trip consists of typical 12 days trek including two acclimatization day. The trek starts from Lukla. We walk for around 3 to 4 hrs and rest at a hotel in Phakding. Next, we will head to Namche Bazaar where we will spend two nights including acclimatization day. Our quest for conquering Everest will take us to Tengboche, popular for an ancient Monastery, a cozy night here will re-enerzize us for next day hike. Spending two days in Dingboche and adopting in the higher altitude, we tread to Lobuche followed by Gorakshep and Everest Base Camp then retrace our trail to Pangboche, Namche, and Lukla where we end our trek.

Everest base camp trek route and duration distance?

EBC trek route winds through major spots like Lukla, Phakding, Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Dingboche, Lobuche, Gorak Shep, and Everest Base Camp. The total walking distance is 130 Km, however, we will only walk around fifteen Km each day. The typical trek duration is 12 days and we will be walking only for 6 to 8 hrs every day, so there is nothing to fear. However, the route is not that easy as it is filled with rocky terrains and glaciers, so we need both mental and physical strength to conquer the Everest region.

Day 1
Day 1: Arrival at Kathmandu:

Nepal Trekking Path representative will be waiting for you with a nameplate at the airport. We will drive you to your hotel via private vehicle. You may spend the rest of the day shopping for the trek. We will have a short briefing session.

Day 2
Day 2: Flight to Lukla- Trek to Phakding (3-4hrs):

The trek in the Everest region technically start today with a short, scenic and thrilling flight to Lukla. After an early morning breakfast, you will board your flight to Lukla. Within 45 minutes you will be in the Lukla airport where you will meet our crew. We will spend a few minutes exploring the place, have a cup of coffee then start our Everest hike. The Everest region unfolds itself gradually as we descend alongside the raging Dudh Koshi river. It will take us three to four hours to reach Phakding. We will have lunch and spend a night at a hotel.

Day 3
Day 3: Trek from Phakding to Namche Bazaar(5 to 6 hrs):

Post breakfast, we resume our trek to Namche Bazaar, ascending alongside the Dudh Koshi river and crossing suspension bridges until we reach a small village called Monzo offering basic service to trekker and glimpse of Khumbi-la Mountain and Thermasharkhu peak. Just a few minutes walk from Monjo and we reach the Southern entrance of Sagarmatha National Park where our guide will take a trek permit and TIMS. Continuing our hike, we will reach Jhorsalle, the last village until we reach Namche Bazaar. After a delicious lunch, we will cross a suspension bridge and ascend until we reach Namche Bazaar. On the way, we will get a glimpse of a number of mountains including Mt. Everest. If time permits, we will explore the place a bit then call it a night.

Day 4
Day 4: Rest Day at Namche Bazaar for acclimatization and excursion:

Today we will embark into a short hike and spend the rest of the day strolling around Namche Bazaar. After an early morning breakfast, we will start walking towards the Everest View Hotel. Just 2 to 3 hours walk and we will find our self on the lap of sparkling alps including Mt. Everest, Ama Dablam peak, Lhotse, Tawache, Tarmasarku etc. We will enjoy the view while sipping local tea/coffee then head to visit the museum. Heading back to Namche Bazaar, we will explore the village. Namche Bazaar has every kind of facilities anyone could imagine at that altitude; from international restaurants to internet cyber to video hall.

Day 5
Day 5: Trek from Namche Bazaar to Tengboche (5 to 6 hrs):

Fueling in breakfast, we start our hike through the military museum and walk on relatively flat land for half of the day. We will descend until we reach a village called Phungi-Tenga, our lunch destination. After Enjoying lunch on the gorge of river Imjatse and midst of alpine woodland we resume our journey. The trail become little tricky from here onward. We will ascend for two hours alongside colorful rhododendron and pine forest until we reach Tengboche.

Tengboche is popular for the Tengboche monastery. As soon as we enter the village our spirit lift up. We will be welcomed by the sound of monk chanting prayers and performing daily rituals. Tengboche is surrounded by Kwangde peak, Thermashrakhu peak, Kangtenga, Mt. Ama Dablam, Nuptse, Lhotse and Mt. Everest.

Day 6
Day 6: Trek From Tengboche to Dingboche (5 to 6 hrs):

Today’s trek will be relatively difficult as we descend through the small steep passage before crossing a river. From here, the trail passes alongside the river valley. On the way, there are few tea houses. Walking over the steep hill and descending for a while, we will reach Pangboche Village. A short hike from here will take us to Shamore, perfect stop to have lunch. A bit of uphill climb and crossing a river followed by another hour of steep climb will take us to our today’s ultimate destination i.e. Dingboche. Most of the people trekking in Everest region end their trek in Tengboche so we won’t find many trekkers on the way to Dingboche.

Day 7
Day 7: Rest Day at Dingboche for acclimatization and excursion:

To give yourself some time to adjust in the higher altitude, it is very important to spend a day in Dingboche. Today’s schedule includes a short hike to Nagagunj hill and exploring the place in the afternoon. Nagagunj hill offers a spectacular view of Mt. Makalu. Overnight stay at a hotel.

Day 8
Day 8: Trek from Dingboche Lobuche ( 5 to 6 hrs):

A short walk in a rugged track will lead us to Dugla. The trail eventually gets tougher, however, view of majestic mountains, prayer flags, and monasteries will keep our mind away from our sore feet. Thukla is a perfect place for lunch. After lunch, our trek will take us to steep uphill. An hour walk will lead us to Thulga pass top where we can see the monuments of trekkers who died on the quest of conquering Mt. Everest. Another one hour of the walk will take us to Lobuche. We call it a day after a luscious ethnic dinner.

Day 9
Day 9: Trek from Lobuche to Gorak Shep and Everest Base Camp (6 to 7 hrs):

Today is the ‘D’ day. Today we will be conquering our ultimate destination Everest Base Camp. Our journey to Base Camp starts after an early morning breakfast. The trail starts with gentle slope followed by rocky moraine and ice. Mt. Pumori, Nuptse and Mt Everest are some of the mountains we will glimpse at on the way. We will take a short rest after reaching Gorak Shep.

A two to three hours walk from Gorak Shep will take us to Everest Base Camp. We will walk through Glacier and moraine. From base camp we can have an up-close view of several mountains including Lho-la, Nuptse, Changtse, however, Mt Everest does not reveal itself yet. To view Mt. Everest we have to hike to Kalapatthar. Take pictures and enjoy the view before heading back to Gorak Shep where we will spend a night.

Day 10
Day 10: Hike from Gorak Shep to Kalapatthar to Pangboche ( 6 to 7 hrs):

Our hike start before a dawn. Two hours of steep climb and we will be seeing the most spectacular sunrise ever; the sun rises above the world’s highest peak, Mt Everest. The view is mesmerizing. We will soak into its beauty, snap few pictures then head back to Gorak Shep. After breakfast in Gorak Shep, we follow the trail that leads to Pangboche. The trail passes through Lobuche, Thukla Periche and Somar. We will descend most of the day, however, there are few uphill as well.

Day 11
Day 11: Trek from Pangboche to Namche Bazaar (6 to 7 hrs):

Today’s journey will take us back to Tengboche Monastery then passes Imjatse river. We will walk through the lush forest, small streams, and verdant meadows. After treading on a steep hill for an hour, we will walk on a flat land until we reach Namche Bazaar.

Day 12
Day 12: Trek from Namche Bazaar to Lukla (6 to 7 hrs):

): Leaving the beautiful village behind, we will head to Phakding walking alongside the beautiful river. The trail becomes steep from here onward. We will have our lunch in Lukla. Spend the day exploring Lukla Bazaar. In the evening, we will have a small victory party. Share our experiences with our teammates.

Day 13
Day 13: Flight to Kathmandu: Post breakfast, our representative will take you to the airport.

35 to 45 minutes of scenic flight then transfer to your respective hotel. If you wish you may do some shopping in the nearby market. Overnight stay at a hotel.

Day 14
Day 14: Sightseeing in Kathmandu:

Breakfast at a hotel then head to Kathmandu Durbar Square. Beautiful palaces, ancient homes, amazingly carved temples, and high-end restaurants make the place attractive. See the living goddess, check out the handicrafts or splurge on the local food.

Our Next Destination is Swoyambhunath, a holy place for Buddhist. The complex built centuries ago sits on the hillock offering the captivating view of Kathmandu City. Surrounded by trees, monkeys are very common, so take special care of your belongings.

From Swoyambhunath we will drive to Pashupati. Pashupati holds a great importance among Hindus. Non-Hindus cannot enter the temple premises, however, we can have a look at the temple from the bank of Bagmati river. There are lots of temples and the area is quite big.

On the outskirts of Kathmandu sits another holy place, Bouddhanath. A small yet captivating plaza houses few temples, shrines and prayer flags.

We will meet for farewell dinner in the evening.

Day 15
Day 15: Departure

The most awaited tour has come to an end. Today you will leave for your homeland. Our representative will transfer you to Tribhuvan International Airport for your flight. Have a safe journey.

How difficult is the Everest base camp trek? Can I join?

Conquering the trail of the world’s highest mountain won’t be that easy but this does not mean you cannot do it. It is a moderate to adventurous trek. You might face some difficulty on the way but with little physical fitness and mental strength, you will be able to overcome any hurdles. The beautiful sceneries and colorful villages will keep your mind away from sore feet. We have seen elderly, young, underweight and overweight people embarking into this trek. So, yes you can join the trek and complete it successfully.

What trek preparation is needed for EBC trek?

Though EBC trek is a non-technical trek, it is quite challenging. So, it’s is better if you prepare beforehand. You may do some exercises on a regular basis for 3 to 6 months. Exercise that strengthens your body will be effective. It’s advisable to jog, run, swim or embark on short hikes regularly. Exercise like squats, sit-ups, back & shoulder flyes, shoulder presses, Kettle-bell rows, and aerobic training will strengthen your body. Along with physical health, mental stamina is equally needed. Someday trek might seem long and daunting in such situation it’s very important to maintain right attitude.

What about food and accommodation during Everest base camp trek?

Throughout the trek, we will be staying on the lodge or tea houses. These tea houses/lodges are not as comfortable as star hotel in Kathmandu but it caters every basic need of trekker. Talking about the food, we will be served typical Nepali food or ethnic food most of the days but in a few places, we may find international restaurants. Drinking water from tap won’t be safe so it’s better to get boiled water or mineral water. Foods are cooked in a hygienic way using the traditional and modern method of cooking. We know your taste so we prepare meal accordingly.

What if I am very slow in the group?

The rocky and mountainous trail makes the hike difficult. It’s not possible to walk fast in such areas so it won’t be a problem if you cannot walk fast. We hike and enjoy our surroundings at once. There is no rush so don’t worry if you are slow. We have estimated the time keeping everyone’s capacity in mind and moreover, our guide always stay with the one who cannot walk fast and encourage everyone in the team to stick together throughout the trek.

AMS and safety measure needed during EBC trek?

Acute mountain sickness is unavoidable at the high altitude, so it’s wise to be prepared about it. Carry medicines, learn symptoms, precaution and treatment process. Our guides will be carrying first aid box, Oxygen chamber bag, and oxygen cylinder, they will take care of you if you suffer from AMS.

What should I carry in EBC trekking?

Only 15 kg of luggage is allowed in the domestic flight so try to carry only those things that you need the most. ABC will provide you the trip dossier with details about the things you will have to carry. During the trek, you should carry the essential trek gear and your belongings while other things will be carried by the porter.

What are common health issues we face during the trek?

Food poisoning, altitude sickness, stomach ache, and headache are very common problems faced by trekkers. However, our guides will always be there to give you the right advice.

How is the flight to Lukla?

Lukla is a remote area covered by mountains, so change in weather is common due to which Lukla flight gets canceled sometime until the weather gets clear. However, this does not happen every day. It is a 35 to 45 minutes thrilling flight.

Is travel insurance compulsory to embark into the EBC trek?

Yes, travel insurance is mandatory. Buy all-inclusive travel, however, helicopter rescue is not mandatory.

How much distance and hours we should walk everyday?

The round trip is 130km. Every day we will be walking for 6 to 8 hours.

Should we bring minenral water?

Since Nepal Trekking Path practices responsible tourism, we do not encourage you to use any kind of plastics so we provide you with boiled water. Bring a metal bottle or reuse the plastic Nalgene bottle to carry water.

Which season is perfect to trek? Is it possible to trek in winter season?
