Upper Mustang Trek is ideal for people willing to explore new things, delve into the ancient culture and not looking for a luxury tour. It’s rare, rough, unfamiliar yet beautiful and familiar. Since it is a highly restricted area, it’s a privilege to navigate the trail of this hidden gem. People residing here still follow their ancestor’s path preserving their true root not modernization destroy their identity. An only limited number of trekker get permission to explore this ancient region. This is done in order to preserve the local culture, tradition and its landscape. The forbidden kingdom boasts beauty like windswept villages, Colorful houses, yak caravan, deep gorges, arid valleys in every twist and turn. Every inch of this trail will leave us mesmerized. The majestic mountains including Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, Tukche, and Nilgiri make the grueling worthy. We will need a special trekking permit to enter this forbidden land and an officer appointed by the government should accompany us.

The perk of Upper Mustang Trek is the opportunity to witness a completely different world without having to trek too high. The highest elevation point is 3,800 whereas in other classical it’s just the beginning. The place receives very less rainfall as it is set on the spine of Himalayas so we can march into this trail throughout the year except for winter. But those willing to trek in winter can do that too but should be prepared to carry all of their belongings by themselves and sleep in the camp. People residing in this place move to the lower altitude to avoid the harsh winter.

The majority of the trail to Upper Mustang passes alongside the Valley of Kali Gandaki with few steep climbs above the valley. Lo Manthang, the former capital of this region reflects the extravagance architecture, ancient art, and colorful culture. The historic monasteries and mysterious caves around this place has become the archaeologist favorite. The line of prayer flags, hidden chortens and alleys make this place more interesting.

What does the trek cost?

The standard rate of Upper Mustang Trek is USD 1575 per persons .The standard cost includes accommodation, three meals during the trek, Breakfast in Kathmandu, trek permit, TIMS, all type of transportation except international flight charge. What is the trek itinerary?

We start our trek with an early morning flight to Jomsom. After meeting our remaining crew member, we will begin hiking to Kagbeni. The trek will take us to some of the ancient and beautiful villages with great historical and cultural significance. The major attraction of this trek is Lo-Mangthang, an ancient village. Other than Lo Manghtang, we will explore Chele, Geling, Tsarang, Dhakmar, Tsugsang, and Jomsom.

In Kathmandu, we provide you accommodation in star hotel with every facility. Whereas, in the Mustang region, we provide you accommodation in local lodges or tea houses. The rooms have a twin bed. Attach bathroom are very rare in this region. They will provide you with a warm blanket. They provide hot shower too but for that, you will have to pay the extra dollar. These tea houses serve typical Nepali cuisine, soup, potatoes, noodles, vegetables etc. In some tea houses, you might get French fries, pasta, and pizza.

Trek Duration, Route and Distance?

The sixteen days tour provides you with an opportunity to discover the culture, historic villages, green valleys, lakes, and rivers. The trek starts on the fourth day of the trip. A short flight to Jomsom mark the beginning of our trek. From Jomson we will hike to Kagbeni, a gateway to Mustang. From here, the trail winds through Chele, Geling, Tsarang, Lo-Mangthang, Dhakmar then retrace its steps to Geling, Tsugsang, and Jomsom.

Day 1
Day 01: Arrive in Kathmandu:

Meet Nepal Trekking Path airport representative outside the terminal. They will collect your baggage and drive you to your hotel. You may spend the rest of the day in the hotel . You may wander around the local market for last minute shopping and our guide will help you with that. Overnight stay at a cozy hotel room.

Day 2
Day 02: Kathmandu Sightseeing Tour and Preparation day:

Start your day with a luscious breakfast. Our cultural guide will pick you from your hotel for sightseeing. First, we will head to Basantapur Durbar Square. It is a historic palace housing spectacular monuments, temples, palace and statues. After spending around an hour here, we will drive to Swayambhunath. It is merely half an hour away from Basantapur Durbar Square. Nestled on the hillock, the plaza mesmerizes visitors by its amazing architecture, temples, chortens, and vistas of Kathmandu city. Our next destination is Pashupatinath, a magnificent temple around an hour away from Swayambhuath. After witnessing the beauty of this holy place, we will head to Bouddhanath. Roam around the place, visit temples, stupa and prayers wheel, have lunch then head back to your hotel.

In the evening, visit our office where we will discuss the upcoming trek and do the last minute preparation. It was a long day. Take rest at a hotel.

Day 3
Day 03: Drive From Kathmandu to Pokhara 950 m – 06 hrs:

Have breakfast and get ready for today’s journey. Today, we will drive to Pokhara on scenic landscapes. Get a glimpse of rustic Nepal, drive alongside serpentine streams, terraced field, small settlements, and Trishuli river. The route is dotted with several restaurants, we will stop in one of them to have lunch.

Pokhara is popular among the tourist as a city of lakes. It is a small city in the midst of majestic mountains. The major asset of this city is its peaceful ambiance. Despite being repleted by tourist throughout the year, the city is calm. We will take some time to wander around this heavenly city and stroll around Fewa Lake.

Day 4
Day 04: Morning Flight to Jomsom 2,700 and Trek to Kagbeni – 04 hrs:

Hop into the domestic airlines heading to Jomsom. Merely a twenty minutes flight will give you chill as it cruises close to massive mountains. Jomsom is a small village set alongside Kali Gandaki River Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri on the backdrop, famous for strong winds, landscapes, and apple. Rest of our crew members will join you there and trek to Kagbeni begins. Walk beside the raging river than on the riverbed. The weather gets windy after 11 am. The trail passes through the gorge of Kali Gandaki then descend until Eklaibhatti where we will have our lunch. Walking in the flat trail for some hours we will reach Kagbeni. Explore old fort, red gompa, temples, statues of Buddha and stroll around the village. One of the most picturesque section in Annapurna region, Kagbeni opens the door to Mustang.

Day 5
Day 05: Trek From Kagbeni to Chele 3,050m – 06 hrs:

As we head out of the village we will take a short but steep climb over the cliff. From there Kagbeni looks amazing. A short hike on the fluctuating cliff will take us to a small village Tangbe. Walking on the narrow trail amid the beautiful trees and ancient building, we will come out of the village then follow a trail winding downhill to Chhusang. A colorful village with prayer walls, cave and monastery is another visual treat of this trek as well as our lunch spot. Hike on the riverbed while enjoying the vistas of soil erosion. A final steep climb after crossing Kali Gandaki river will take us to Chele.

Day 6
Day 06: Trek From Chele to Geling 3,540 m – 05 hrs:

We kick off our trek after a luscious breakfast. Though the trek is long it is relatively easy so we won’t have any problem navigating the trail from Chele to Geling. The first trail ascend beside a steep canyon offering vistas of the sparkling Himalayas, the .. and Nilgiri. Walk down on the trail leading to a beautiful settlement in a midst of captivating trees. From here, the trail ascends until we reach a valley at an elevation of 3,800 meters. A downhill hike for around an hour will take us to Geling.

Day 7
Day 07: Trek From Geling to Tsarang 3,560 m – 06 hrs:

Start a morning with a brief visit of Geling monastery and Buddhist mani prayer. From here we will trace the trail leading to Ghami Village. Cross a bridge over Tangmar Chuu river then walk through trail dotted with long mani walls heading to Dhakmar village. A brief descend from the village will take us to Tsarang. The small settlement is decorated with large fields. The sight of farmers working in the field and mule grazing is common. Explore the village then take rest at a hotel after dinner.

Day 8
Day 08: Trek From Tsarang to Lo-Mangthang 3,700 m – 04 hrs:

Today’s trek is a perfect blend of culture, adventure, nature, and remoteness. 4 to 5 hours trek passes through flat land with few ups and downs. Cross a steel bridge and walk on an easy trail to reach Marang village. A steep climb will lead us to Lo La from where we can have a view of Lo Manthang in distance. A gradual descend on the rugged and dusty trail then hike on a fine trail will take us to Lo Manthang. To ensure the safety of the village, a classic wall had been constructed in the past.

Day 9
Day 09: In Lo-Mangthang for acclimatization and Local Hike:

The ancient village houses three monasteries with some of the finest Buddhist artworks. We will explore traditional medicine clinic and ancient monasteries. We will embark on the short hike so that our body can adjust in the high altitude. Returning back, we will explore the local culture and lifestyle.

Day 10
Day 10: Trek From Lo-Manthang to Dhakmar 3,810 m – 06 hrs:

It’s time to bid goodbye to this hidden gem. Have breakfast, pack your belongings then follow the trail that leads back to Marang. From here, the trail winds west leading to Dhakmar. Today we will walk for around 6 hours.

Day 11
Day 11: Trek From Dhakmar to Geling 3,806 m – 06 hrs:

Wake up early in the morning, eat breakfast while enjoying the morning view then pack our belongings and set off for today’s’ hike to Geling. The hike starts with a walk outside Dhakmar. Walking past the line of mani wall. A few minutes walk from here will take us across a Ghami Khola. Crossing Ghami Khola, we will reach a beautiful Ghami Village. A brief walk from here will lead us to our today’s destination, Geling. As we enter the village, the historic monastery and Buddhist mani prayer will welcome us. If we reach early, we will stroll around the village one more time, take pictures, be mesmerized by the captivating landscapes and soak up the beauty of this place. After a delicious dinner, we will call it a night.

Day 12
Day 12: Trek From Ghiling to Tsugsang 2,980 m – 06 hrs:

: A delicious breakfast will fuel us for today’s trek. Start with a gradual descent to a village called Syangboche. 2 to 3 hours walk from Syangboche will take us to a small pass at an altitude of 3,860 m. From the pass, we will have a picturesque view of jaw-dropping snowy alps and the dramatic landscape will take our breath away. Enjoying the view, we will descend and come across Bhena and Samar, small villages on the lap of rugged Himalayans. Hike alongside a stream, cross Gyakar and Chele before reaching our ultimate destination, Tsugsang. Since it will just take us six hours to reach the village, we will be left with an ample amount of time to wander around the settlement, chat with locals and learn their culture.

Day 13
Day 13: Trek From Tsugsang to Jomsom 2, 715 m – 04 hours:

From here the trail becomes more easier giving us the opportunity to have a more leisurely walk. Descend to the valley of Kaligandaki river and continue on the same path until we reach Ekalebhatti. We will stop here to catch a breath then head to Kaligandaki river valley. In the afternoon, the weather gets windy so trek becomes a little difficult. Walk on the level path for a few hours to reach Jomsom. The village is a junction of trekkers willing to navigate trails of Annapurna circuit and Dhaulagiri circuit.

Day 14
Day 14: Fly to Pokhara and Transfer to Hotel:

After an early morning breakfast, we will head to Jomson airport and hop on the flight to Pokhara. In 25 minute we will be in Pokhara. Since we will be left with plenty of time, we will head out to explore the city. The calm ambiance and scenic beauty of this place will leave us awe-inspired. We will walk around Fewa lake, stroll around the local market and head back to the hotel to take rest.

Day 15
Day 15: Drive back to Kathmandu – 06 hrs:

Post breakfast, we will begin our journey on the smooth road meandering alongside small villages, streams, green valleys, and forest. The terraced farms and beautiful huts are some of the highlights of this drive. On the way, we will see a raging Trishuli river. Driving through the mid-hill for around four hours we will reach Kathmandu. Freshen up and we will meet for a farewell dinner. You will be served the typical Nepali cuisine. Overnight stay at a hotel.

Day 16
Day 16: International Departure Homeward Bound:

Today, your Nepal tour comes to an end. Pack your bag, do the last minute shopping than our escort will drive you to the Tribhuvan International Airport three hours before your scheduled flight. Have a safe flight.

- What is the trek grading? Who can join?

Explore the timeless culture, tradition, and lifestyle along with unspoiled landscapes during the hike into the hidden valley. The highest altitude we sleep is 3,700 m. So in comparison to other classical treks in Nepal, it is relatively easy. Trails in some section are easy and in some section of this trek, you might have to climb steep hills. In short, it is moderate to adventurous trek. Anyone who have no leg-muscle issue and other chronic diseases can embark into this trek. Moreover, if you think you won’t be able to walk anymore, you might hire a horse or a jeep.

- Is it must take a flight to Jomson?

No, it is not compulsory but driving from Pokhara to Jomson can be hectic and consume more time. On top of that, the condition of the road is not much good. So, it’s wise to take a flight. If there is a bad weather, the flight are canceled until the weather clears. So you don’t have to be afraid. You will be safe.

- What is the size of the trekking group and who will acquire the permit?

To navigate the trail of the restricted area there must be at least two trekkers, otherwise, you won’t be able to get the special permits. You cannot embark into this trek independently, you need to hire an establish trekking agency. Our guide will issue the permits.

- Which time is best to visit this place?

The best time to embark into this trek is from March to November. If you trek this area in March, you will get the opportunity to witness one of the major festivals of this reason, Tiji festival. Unlike other treks, you can embark on this trek in rainy season as well because the area receives very less rainfall. However, in winter temperature can go down to -25 and not many people stay in the village during this season. So we don’t recommend you to trek in winter.

- Why should I travel with you?

To trek in Upper Mustang, you must hire a trekking company with local staff. It’s a government rule. - Do I need to train for the trek?

If you are in a good health and exercise regularly you will be good. However, trekkers with lungs, legs, knee and heart problem can also embark into this trek but after visiting your doctor and only if they advise doing so. But, Nepal Trekking Path has tailored the itinerary in such a way that you won’t feel exhausted or tired though you will walk every day. If you still want to prepare, you may jog or do some cardio exercise.

- Do you customize the Upper Mustang trek?

Nepal Trekking Path does not believe in making a hard and fast rule when it comes to holidays. So yes, we are open to customizing your trek as per your requirement .

- Is there electricity up there?

Yes, but due to the wind, power cut is common. It is done to avoid any uncertainty. However, in some village, people have planted solar. To cut it short, you might or might not get the opportunity to charge your phone, camera. So carry extra batteries or power bank.

- What if I cannot match other trekker’s pace?

There will be more than one guide in a group. Leader assigns assistant systematically so no one is left behind. He will encourage everyone to stick together.

- What kind of water will we get to drink?

We discourage the use of plastic bottled water as there is a disposable issue and it’s not environment-friendly either. So carry two metal bottle and refill it whenever you need to. You may either drink boil or filtered water.

- What kind of travel insurance should I buy?

It is compulsory to have travel insurance covering every aspect of your adventure. However, we ensure you that there won’t be any issues that would need evacuation. Just to be fully equipped and enjoy the vacation without any hassle, buy travel insurance as a backup.

- How is the accommodation?

In Kathmandu, you will be staying in a star hotel whereas in Mustang there are few tea houses with basic services. The hotel has a twin bed and a common toilet. These tea houses try to offer the best they can so you won’t be disappointed if you keep the expectation accordingly.

- Shoes and day pack?

You should wear lightweight boots and hiking shoes. The day pack should not weight more than 5 kg. You don’t have to carry everything. Just carry the things you will need on a particular day like personal toiletries, camera, water bottle etc

- Is there health post if we need medical assistance?

Our guides can easily handle the minor health issues as they are trained in first aid. But if you need more medical assistance then there are health posts and hospital in large villages. If you need evacuation, we will send helicopter rescue. Your travel insurance should cover the expenses.

- What equipment should I bring for the trek?

We have listed the equipment needed for the trek. Please check it and if you still have confusion feel free to contact us.

- How many hours do we walk every day?

Excluding lunchtime, we will walk for around 4 to 6 hours every day. However, it also depends on your walking pace. To reach our destination on time, we embark on our trek early in the morning.

- How much weight will a porter carry?

They will carry around 15 kg or 20 kg. However, the weight they carry varies depending on trekking altitude and route.

- How much should I tip?

Since tipping is not compulsory in Nepal, you may tip as per your wish. Though it’s not compulsory, porter and guides might expect . So as an appreciation of their hard work and to help their family financially, you can tip them.
