Helambu Cultural Trek is barely 30 km away from the Kathmandu Valley yet not known to many. It is a perfect blend of contrasting landscape, sceneries and culture and is an ideal place for adventure. Otherworldly yet familiar, the place boasts the great variety of trails, a distinct combination of flora and fauna, green valleys, lush forest, and glorious mountains, making the tour diverse and fulfilling. The main reason for embarking into this trek is to witness the Hyolomo culture of Helambu closely.

We kick off the trek with a short drive to Sundarijal from Kathmandu followed by four hours hike to Chisapani through a beautiful forest. The trail winds through Khutumsang, Tharepati, Tarke Gyang, Sermathang and ends in Malemchi Pul Bazar. One day Kathmandu sightseeing takes you deep into Nepal’s history and culture.

What is the trek cost?

The standard rate of Helambu Cultural Trek is USD ….. The cost is determined by the transportation, accommodation, mode of tour and tour plan. In Kathmandu, we will keep you in a star hotel whereas during trek you will spend your nights in simple, clean tea houses. The standard price does not cover the cost of a meal in Kathmandu, personal expenses etc. We have given the detail above.

What is the trek Itinerary?

Helambu Cultural Trek will be 6 typical walking days and remaining days will be for sightseeing in Kathmandu and transport from Kathmandu – Sundarlijal, Melamchi Bazaar to Kathmandu, arrival and departure day. We have designed this trek keeping the average trekker’s need and comfort in mind. Driving from Kathmandu to Sundarijal and begin the trek from the Sundarijal to Chisapani the same day. However, there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to enjoying the holiday, so if you want any changes we can tailor the itinerary as per your need.

Trek distance, route, and duration?

The trailhead is 30 km drive from Kathmandu valley. We start our hike from Sundarijal. The trail is sculpted through the major villages Chisapani, Khutumsang, Tharepati, Tarkeghyang, Sermathang, and Malemchi Pul Bazar.

Day 1
Day 01: Arrive in Kathmandu:

Meet our airport representative outside the terminal of Tribhuvan International Airport. They will drive you to your hotel in a comfortable tourist vehicle. If you are left with time, you may wander around the market, do some shopping and witness the colorful culture of Nepal. We will meet for a briefing of the trek. Spend a night at a 3-star hotel.

Day 2
Day 02: Drive to Sundarijal and trek to Chisapani 2,300 m – 04 hrs:

This morning we will drive to Sundarijal post breakfast. Driving on a busy road for around an hour, we will finally reach Sundarijal, our trailhead. From here, we will climb on the steep staircase alongside the giant water pipeline. The rocky trail is dotted with villages and trees. We will walk for around four hours enjoying the view of green hills and vegetation.

Day 3
Day 3: Trek From Chisapani to Khutumsang (2,470m) (6 to 7 hours):

The third day of the trek starts with a downhill walk through meadows and farmlands with a majestic view of Langtang Mountain range in the distance. Crossing Gul Bhanjyang, we ascend to the hilltop then descend and again climb uphill alongside the woods and ethnic villages. In around 6 to 7 hours, we will be in Kutumsang.

Day 4
Day 4: Trek From Khutumsang to Tharepati (3,490 m):

Climbing uphill alongside the forest enjoying the sound of birds tweeting, we will reach our lunch spot. After having lunch amid the woodland and taking a brief rest, we will head to Thadepati.

Day 5
Day 5: Trek From Thadepati to Tarke Gyang (2,620 m):

A trail descending through the fir and rhododendron forests take us to Melamchi Gaun housing an ancient monastery. After exploring the monastery, we continue walking on the same trail passing through the forests. Crossing the Melamchi river, we will ascend until we reach Tarkeghyang. The village is dominated by Helm people. There is a colorful monastery. Visit the monastery, offer the prayer then have dinner and call it a day.

Day 6
Day 6: Trek From Tarkeghyang to Sermathang (2,620 m):

Today’s trek will be fairly easy as we will be walking on the leveled trail for most of the day. Resuming our trek post breakfast, we will head to Sermanthang. We will be accompanied by sparkling mountains throughout the trail. Upon reaching Sermanthang, explore the village for a while then call it a night after dinner.

Day 7
Day 7: Trek From Sermathang to Malemchi Pul Bazar (846 m) and drive to Kathmandu:

We will start our day with a delicious breakfast then kick off our trek on the relatively flat path. The trail decorated with colorful forest housing rhododendron, chestnut and fern plants will take us to Melamchi Bazar. Melamchi Bazar is dominated by Sherpas, Kshertis, Brahmins and Tamang people. We will stroll around the market have lunch then hop into the tourist bus to return to Kathmandu. Since the road passes through Dhulikhel, we will stop there to have a mesmerizing view of mountains, farms, and countryside. In a few hours, we will be in Kathmandu.

Day 8
Day 8: Kathmandu full day sightseeing tour with a farewell dinner:

Today we will explore the Kathmandu city’s cultural heritage listed in the UNESCO. Post breakfast, we will head to Basantapur Durbar Square. The plaza’s every monument, temple, and the house has a story to tell. Hear some of the fascinating anecdotes from your guide. Explore the ancient palace, delve into the beauty of the antique houses and receive a blessing from the living goddess in Kumari Ghar. Check out the handcrafts, accessories, and souvenirs on the surrounding. The durbar square was devastated by the 2015 earthquake. Renovation work is going on. Snap pictures, enjoy the vistas then hop into the jeep for a short drive to Swayambhunath.
Swayambhunath is a fascinating plaza set on the top of the hill as a symbol of peace and love. Get the aerial view of bustling Kathmandu city, check out the beautiful status, offer prayers in temples and shrines, witness the ritual performed by monks and enjoy the vistas of monkeys playing, but don’t forget to take care of your belonging, monkeys show great interest on them. After exploring this mesmerizing place, we will head to Pashupatinath.
Pashupatinath, nestled on the bank of holy river offers the devotees and visitors insight into Nepal’s history and culture. Over time, few more temples and monuments have been constructed. The main temple is of Lord Shiva constructed in pagoda style with four silver doors. With 492 temples and a large number of statues of different deities, the place is one of the important religious heritage to explore if you want a deep insight into the belief of Nepali people. The plaza is surrounded by sparsely populated forests housing some of the fascinating wild lives including musk deer.
Our next destination is Boudhanath, one of the major tourist attraction is a sacred place for Buddhist and Tibetan people. The plaza houses beautiful shrines, temples, statues, prayer wheels, and prayer flags. We can see several handicraft shops and restaurants in the surrounding. We will have lunch there then head back to the hotel. Spend the remaining day, exploring Thamel and buy souvenirs. We will meet in the evening for dinner.

Day 9
Day 9: International departure homeward bound:

Do the last minute souvenir shopping, pack your bags, have breakfast or lunch before our representative pick you from your hotel to transfer you to Tribhuvan International Airport. We hope you had a great time with us. It was a pleasure serving you.

When should I book the trip?

In the peak season, you will need to book the trip ahead to ensure the availability. We need to manage everything before your arrival so that you won’t face any difficulties during the trek.

Is laundries service available?

No, you have to hand wash your clothes and dry on direct sunlight.

What kind of food is served?

Nepali, ethnic and continental meals are served.

Do you sell travel insurance?

No, Nepal Trekking Path does not sell insurance. However, you cannot travel with us without travel insurance. Buy comprehensive travel insurance. You won’t need helicopter rescue.

How experienced will your guide be?

We hire the local guide with years of experience. They are trained in guiding, first aid and handling the unforeseen situation. The will take care of you and ensure your well being.

I have never trek before, will I be able to complete this trek?

This trek is conducted on the lower altitude. The trail is not too steep and you will have to walk for around 4 to 7 hours every day. Anyone with good health can complete this trek easily.

Is tipping compulsory?

No, tipping is not compulsory in Nepal. However, if you want to help your guides and porters financially, you may do so.

Is this trek too difficult?

It is a relatively easy trek that is carried out on the lower altitude. You won’t have to climb steep hills and walk too long.
